The turbine gear transmission is a mechanical transmission method used to transfer motion and power between intersecting shafts (typically at 90°). Its advantages and disadvantages are as follows:

1. Advantages of the turbine gear transmission

1.1. Large transmission ratio, compact structure:

The single-stage transmission ratio is large (usually up to 10:1 to 100:1, and special designs can reach 500:1 or more), using fewer components can achieve a large reduction ratio, making the transmission device very compact, small in size, and saving installation space.

1.2. Smooth transmission, low noise:

The worm gear and worm are continuously multi-toothed meshing (line contact), the meshing process is gradual, the transmission is smooth, with little impact and vibration, and the noise level is significantly lower than parallel-axis gear transmission under the same conditions.

1.3. Self-locking property (under specific conditions):

When the helix angle of the worm is less than the equivalent friction angle between the meshing teeth, the transmission has reverse self-locking property (that is, only the worm can drive the worm wheel, and the worm wheel cannot reverse drive the worm). This characteristic plays an important role in safety protection for lifting machinery, elevating platforms, etc., which require prevention of reverse rotation.

1.4. Relatively high bearing capacity:

The meshing of the worm gear and worm is line contact, and the number of teeth participating in the meshing is large, the tooth surface has strong bearing capacity, and can withstand certain impact loads, suitable for heavy-duty transmission.

1.5. Applicable to intersecting spaces:

Suitable for the transmission of two shafts that are intersecting (typically at 90°), solving the layout problems that cannot be solved by parallel-axis or intersecting-axis transmissions.

2. Disadvantages of the turbine gear transmission

1. Low transmission efficiency, prone to overheating: Due to the large relative sliding speed between the meshing tooth surfaces, the friction loss is large, and the transmission efficiency is relatively low (generally between 60% and 90%, single-worm or self-locking transmission has lower efficiency). The friction generates a large amount of heat, the temperature rises, and auxiliary cooling measures are often required.

2. Severe wear: Large sliding friction leads to tooth surface wear. At high speeds, heavy loads, or poor heat dissipation, tooth surface adhesion (metal adhesion) and other failures may occur, and high lubrication and material requirements are needed.

3. High manufacturing cost: To reduce friction and wear, the worm gear ring usually requires expensive anti-friction materials (such as tin bronze, aluminum bronze, etc.), and the worm needs to be hardened steel and undergo precise grinding, with high processing accuracy, resulting in a higher overall manufacturing cost.

4. Large axial force: Both the worm and the worm wheel generate large axial loads during transmission, requiring high axial load-bearing capacity of the supporting bearings, increasing the complexity of bearing combination design.

5. Not suitable for large power continuous transmission and extremely high rotational speed: Not suitable for large power continuous transmission and extremely high rotational speed occasions, mostly suitable for occasions with less power transmission or intermittent operation.

6. Unreliable self-locking property: Self-locking property only holds under low helix angle and low efficiency conditions. In vibration, impact, or high-efficiency designs, self-locking is unreliable and requires additional mechanical braking devices.
