How To Replace The Steel Balls in A Ball Screw?

How To Replace The Steel Balls in A Ball Screw?

1. Preparation and tool list

Spread an anti-oil rubber mat on the workbench, and prepare fine-tipped tweezers, specialized lubricant, and a magnifying glass. It is recommended to wear anti-static gloves to prevent sweat from corroding the steel balls, and have a clean, lint-free cloth ready to wipe the track. The toolkit should include a 0.5mm hex key and a magnetic pick, the latter used to prevent the steel balls from scattering again.

Measure the diameter of the fallen steel balls in advance and verify the screw shaft groove parameters. Thoroughly clean the interior of the nut with industrial alcohol, paying special attention to metal debris inside the helical grooves. Prepare spare steel balls (It is recommended to have 10% more steel balls than required) and set up a macro camera to record the initial assembly state.

2. Disassembly inspection and fault diagnosis

When removing the dustproof end cover, keep a 45° tilt angle to avoid leftover steel balls from rolling out. Use a magnetic rod to hold the outer circulation tube while inspecting the reverser for deformation with an endoscope. Pay special attention to the wear on the steel ball circulation path. Measure the track depth difference with a micrometer; it must not exceed 0.01mm.

Place the disassembled parts on the locating disc in assembly order and mark the starting end of the nuts with a color marker pen. Use a projector to enlarge the view of the steel ball contact surface; normal indentations should appear as continuous and uniform ellipses. If step-like wear or pitting is found on the track, the entire circulation unit must be replaced.

3. Practical tips for reinstalling steel balls

Apply nanoscale lubricant evenly in the groove of the nut. Use tweezers to insert each steel ball one by one using the 'three-point contact method'. After inserting every five balls, rotate the nut 30° to check for smoothness. Stop immediately if resistance suddenly increases. Use the cross arrangement method to ensure even distribution of the steel balls, and leave 2-3 balls as adjustment allowance.

Use a specially designed guide tube to assist the steel balls into the track, maintaining a 15° angle with the screw shaft axis. After assembly, conduct a preload test: rotate the nut clockwise to the critical resistance point, then back off by 1/4 turn to lock the anti-loosening washer. Check the running path with a stroboscope; a qualified reassembly should display a continuous, smooth spiral light band.

4. Precision testing and error handling

No-load testing is conducted in three stages: first, manually rotate 3 times to detect any sticking points, then use an electric tool for low-speed running at 0.5 m/min, and finally perform a back-and-forth test at 5 m/min. Use a laser interferometer to measure axial play, with an allowable error not exceeding 0.005 mm. If abnormal sounds occur, disassemble and check the arrangement of the steel balls.

When periodic vibrations occur after reassembly, it may be due to differences in the diameter of the steel balls. Use a sieve to group by particle size, ensuring that the difference in diameter of the steel balls within the same nut does not exceed 0.001mm. For unremovable backlash, pre-stretching can be performed on specialized equipment, but the stretching amount must be controlled within ±5% of the nominal value.

5. Daily maintenance and preventive measures

Establish a periodic lubrication log, replenishing special lubricant every 200 hours of operation. In shock load conditions, it is recommended to check for nut cracks monthly using penetrant inspection fluid. Set up vibration monitoring thresholds; if acceleration exceeds 4 m/s⊃2;, immediately shut down for maintenance.

Modify the installation brackets to eliminate eccentric loading stress, and add protective tubing to the non-operational section of the ball screw. Establish a standard for ball replacement cycles: mandatory replacement after 8,000 hours under normal conditions, and for precision machines, replace the entire circulation unit after 5 million cumulative operations. Regularly use an infrared thermal imager to monitor temperature rise.
