What are the differences between brass and bronze materials in lead screw nuts?

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc,while bronze is an alloy composed primarily of copper,most often combined with tin,but sometimes with other metals.Due to their properties,these two alloys have a variety of uses.


Brass is more malleable than zinc or copper.It has a low melting point(900 degrees Celsius)and flows during melting,making it easy to cast in molds.The combination of iron,aluminum,silicon and manganese gives brass wear and corrosion resistance.Stress cracking occurs when exposed to ammonia.


Bronze is hard and brittle.It melts at 950 degrees Celsius,but this depends on the amount of tin present in the alloy.Bronze is more resistant to corrosion(especially seawater corrosion)and metal fatigue than steel,and also conducts heat and electricity better than most steels.


The composition of the two alloys depends on the specific use.Cartridge brass,for example,contains 30% zinc and is used to make gun cartridges.Naval brass contains up to 39.7% zinc and is used in a variety of applications on ships.Bismuth bronze is a bronze alloy consisting of 52 parts copper,30 parts nickel,12 parts zinc,5 parts lead,and 1 part bismuth.It maintains a good polish and is sometimes used in light reflectors and mirrors.

Brass is used in applications that require low friction,such as locks,gears,bearings,door handles,ammunition,and valves.It is used in plumbing and electrical applications.

Bronze is well suited for springs,bearings,bushings,automotive transmission pilot bearings and similar accessories,especially in the bearings of small electric motors.Phosphor bronze is especially suitable for precision grade bearings and springs.Before the widespread use of stainless steel,bronze was particularly suitable for use in ships and Marine fittings because of its combination of toughness and resistance to saltwater corrosion.Bronze is still commonly used in ship propellers and submersible bearings.
